I've also tried various alarm clock set ups. I've tried having multiple alarm clocks, hiding the alarm clock so I have to search around and find it in the morning, and putting the alarm on the opposite side of my room. Still, I've found I've hit the snooze button far too often.
I've dumped buckets of cold water on myself in the morning, to wake up. It's pretty effective, but a bit extreme.
I decided to ask my youngest sister, Tamara, how she's always been able to get up in the morning. She revealed an interesting concept, that I've been applying, even outside of the topic of waking up. I don't remember her exact words, so I'm paraphrasing, but she said something like this, “When I get up in the morning, I just get up. I don't allow myself to go back to sleep. Sometimes you have to punch through that invisible wall and decide not to let yourself be lazy. It's like when you get into a cold pool or chilly lake. If you try and slowly adjust to the temperature, it's much more excruciating. Instead, you have to take the plunge and get wet all over.”
In life, sometimes we need to embrace the cold water. We need to make a choice. We need to punch through that invisible wall and not allow ourselves to shrink back in fear or laziness. As a Christian, I believe that my will power alone won't achieve the success in life I desire. Rather, I need to submit my will, to the will of the One who made me and to allow Him to direct me in His strength. But once He's shown me the way to go, I can't hesitate to step out and jump in, as He guides.
Is there something you're afraid to face in your life? Is there something you know you need to do? Instead, do you feel like hitting the snooze button and staying in your comfortable surroundings, for “a few more minutes”? Embrace the cold water, punch through that invisible wall! The wall is not the “what ifs” you've regarded as blockages, the wall may actually be your own hesitation or doubt. Take courage; if you have been guided to the right choice, jump in, the water's fine!
